Toxocara is one of the most prevalent nematodes in Iran, which infect humans as an intermediate host. Infection complications result from the larva migration. Human toxocariasis prevalence was various in Iran according to the area of study and population. This study was designed to evaluate the seropositivity of Toxocara IgG in patients with blood disorders and cancer patients in southwest Iran. Moreover, the study of the associated risk factors for this infection. A total of 1122 serum samples, from February 8, 2019 to August 21, 2019, including 600 healthy individuals and 522 individuals with cancer and blood disorders patients were collected. Serum samples were collected for detection of Toxocara IgG by using ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) kit. Sociodemographic data of all participants were collected and examined to determine their association with the infection. Out of 101 individuals with white blood cell disorders (5.94%), red blood cell disorders (7.48%) and cancer patients (11.06%) were seropositive for Toxocara IgG antibodies. The infection rate among all study population revealed that (10.76%) were positive for Toxocara IgG. This study showed the fundamental role of contact with pets and infection in groups with blood cell disorders (P-value ≤ 0.05%); while in cancer patients the association wasn't significant. Other factors such as age, location of residence, and sex showed that the association with this infection wasn't significant.

Toxocara spp. cause one of the most widespread soil-transmitted helminthic infections worldwide. In both developed and developing countries, soil contamination with Toxocara eggs is considered as a major threat to public health. A total of 515 soil samples from 89 sampling sites were collected from different locations of public health such as Wastelands and Streets, public parks, and marginal areas. The soil samples were examined for Toxocara eggs using a centrifugal-floatation technique utilizing a saturated sodium nitrate solution. centralization of positive soil samples in the province was studied by Spatial Statistics Techniques such as Average Nearest Neighbors and Spatial Autocorrelation and Kernel Density Function Toxocara spp. eggs were found in 94 (18.25 %) out of 515 samples collected from the studied areas. According to the results obtained, marginal areas are often contaminated with eggs of Toxocara. Consequently, preventive measures including health education should be implemented to reduce the potential risk of this parasitic infection.

Toxoplasmosis, toxocariasis, and hydatidosis are parasite diseases with a very human-like pathway of infection. worldwide including Iran, there are infected people with these infections. Between 2013 and 2018, serum samples were collected from 124 patients with hydatidosis and 124 serums from hydatidiosis free. Samples were examined for the presence of toxocariasis by detecting IgG antibodies, using the ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) IBL kit and for the presence of IgG antibodies for toxoplasmosis, using the ELISA test. Risk factors such as contact with animal pets; cats and dogs, rural or urban living, age, sex, and Presence of rheumatoid factor (RF) in serum were investigated during the study. The presence of RF was examined using an agglutination test in all confirmed cases of hydatidosis, toxocariasis, and toxoplasmosis. Of the 124 positive cases of hydatidosis, 30 (24.2%), 51 (41.1%) and 15 (12.09%) had toxoplasmosis, toxocariasis and simultaneous infection (toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis), respectively. In people with toxocariasis, rheumatoid factor was reported more frequently than in other cases. The relationship between the prevalence of rheumatoid factor in serum in people with toxocariasis was significant (41.18%). Interaction with dogs and cats and area of residence were identified as risk factors for toxocariasis (P value > 0.005). Although hydatidosis and toxocariasis are Less common infections compare with toxoplasmosis, they are considered a threat to public health in some parts of the world, including Iran. Some factors, such as habitat and interaction with animal pets (dogs and cats), play a more significant role in toxocariasis compared to toxoplasmosis in people with hydatidosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Designing control and therapeutic policies for antibiotic resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is an important causative agent of several invasive and noninvasive infectious diseases and its carriage rates, has been described as the main target in World Health Organization (WHO). The present study was conducted to determine antibiotic resistance pattern, evaluate biofilm forming ability in S. pneumoniae isolates, and find the genetic relationship between cultured strains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following the isolation and identification of S. pneumoniae strains from nasopharyngeal swabs, the ability of biofilm formation and susceptibility pattern of the isolates were screened using semi-quantitative microplate and disk diffusion procedures. Subsequently, Pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method was used to determine the clonal diversity of isolates. RESULTS: The pneumococcal colonization rate in this study was found to be 24%. A large number of our isolates had strong biofilm forming ability. However, there was variation in antibiotic resistance patterns of isolates in children who lived in nursery houses. The genetic similarity among the isolates in PFGE varied from 26.5% to 100% in our isolates. This was the first report of biofilm formation of nasopharyngeal colonized S. pneumoniae in Iran. Genetic variations were also noticeable, when the isolates were fingerprinted by PFGE. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study revealed the need for thoughtful use of antimicrobial agents, continued monitoring of pneumococcal resistance patterns, and prevention of the spread of multi-drug resistant clones.

Penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae strains are found at high rates in Romania and Iran. The mosaic structure of PBP2x was investigated in 9 strains from Iran and in 15 strains from Romania to understand their evolutionary history. Mutations potentially important for ß-lactam resistance were identified by comparison of the PBP2x sequences with the sequence of the related PBP2x of reference penicillin-sensitive S. mitis strains. Two main PBP2x mosaic gene families were recognized. Eight Iranian strains expressed PBP2x variants in group 1, which had a mosaic block highly related to PBP2x of the Spain23F-1 clone, which is widespread among international penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae clones. A second unique PBP2x group was observed in Romanian strains; furthermore, three PBP2x single mosaic variants were found. Sequence blocks of penicillin-sensitive strain S. mitis 658 were common among PBP2x variants from strains from both countries. Each PBP2x group contained specific signature mutations within the transpeptidase domain, documenting the existence of distinct mutational pathways for the development of penicillin resistance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of invasive infections among both young children and elderly people. Common serotypes causing invasive diseases and the emergence of carriers of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Iran is not yet known. Past-vaccine surveillance studies of serotype prevalence patterns in Iran are necessary to monitor the epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Because of variation of pneumococcal serotypes in different geographical regions, in this study we evaluated common serotypes causing pneumococcal infections and healthy carrier children in Tehran by Multiplex PCR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 150 nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from healthy children in Tehran between December 2011 and August a2012, and 100 clinical samples were collected. Identification was performed by biochemical and molecular tests. Serotyping was done by multiplex PCR. We designed primers based on the sequences available for the routine capsular types and combined them into six multiplex PCR. RESULTS: From 150 nasopharyngeal swabs, 40 isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae were identified after identification tests. Thirty six clinical isolates were also detected among clinical samples. Four serotypes (19A, 6, 3, 23F) of S. pneumoniae accounted for 55.7% of both sets of strains isolated from nasal carriage and clinical samples. Serotype 19A was the most common serotype among both groups. CONCLUSION: The multiplex PCR approach was successfully adapted to identify serotypes from more than 91% of the isolates tested. Among S. pneumoniae isolates in Tehran, the most prevalent serotypes were similar among carriage and invasive isolates. Continued monitoring of common serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae is essential for future vaccine formulation in Iran.
